People today regard the Third Age to be the "golden years" of adulthood. It's commonly defined as the period between retirement and the onset of age-related physical, emotional, and cognitive impairments, and today's definition would put it anywhere between 65 to 80 years old. True beauty does not diminish with age. The beauty of youth is distinct from the beauty that comes with age and experience. As we get older, we develop a deeper sense of beauty, one that radiates from the inside out. It's a more genuine, less superficial kind of beauty. It can be seen in the eyes and the assured manner in which one walks through life. It's a unique kind of beauty because it emanates from the inside out and pulls people in.
Here are 3 reasons why getting older makes you happier and why you should embrace it:
- Decrease in negative memories. We have a proclivity for recalling pleasant experiences while neatly ignoring unfavourable ones. It's pointless to dwell on the negative aspects of our past because we can't change them. Of course, saying it is easier than doing it. However, as we get older, we have a greater number of memories to pick from, so we can choose to focus on the good ones.
- The importance of health increases significantly. We don't have an option but to acknowledge the necessity of consuming healthy foods and exercising on a regular basis.
- Practice reflection. We want to make the most of the time we have left, which we recognise is limited. Because of this bittersweet understanding, the wonderful things stand out even more. We don't want to live out our parents' misdeeds or make the same mistakes we did. We improve at seeing our acts through the eyes of others, at taking a step back and thinking how our actions might be seen by others.
However, if seniors tend to ignore and not acknowledge the fact that they are aging, then they are prone to certain effects on them:
- Hearing loss
- Cataracts and Refractive errors
- Back and Neck pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Diabetes
- Depression
- Dementia
Hence, it is important for seniors to be aware of the methods on how to deal with aging. Below are a few steps to be reckoned with:
- Eating fruits and vegetables of different colors every day
- Daily physical activities
- Regular check-ups with your doctor
- Getting the sleep that your body needs
- Memory practice
With that, age is just a number. If we want to, we can reinterpret things in a different way. We can choose to accept ageing with the idea that we spent the first 50 years of our lives in a hurry, with no time, wisdom, or comprehension of what it all meant.
